In October 2024, the WaterLANDS Irish Action Site, LIFE IP Wild Atlantic Nature, published the first manual to guide farmers who want to undertake restoration actions on their land.

The toolkit is part of the training programme developed by the Irish Action Site, which is located at the Cuilcagh-Anierin Uplands Special Area of Conservation (SAC), in Ireland. The user-friendly manual, which aims to guide farmers in restoration actions, is introduced during the training course and is available for farmers to keep after the event.

The toolkit, designed by the WaterLANDS Irish Action Site team, explains the main causes of degradation on peatlands in Ireland and provides the solutions for each cause, covering topics like invasive species removal, drain management and erosion control.

The Action Site Coordinator, Guaduneth Chico, highlights that ‘this publication is a solution-based toolkit for farmers and peatland practitioners where we have tried to explain all problems on Irish peatlands using graphical elements to simplify the key restoration techniques to address each problem. We are building the legacy of WaterLANDS in Ireland by creating the tool that the farmers can keep after the project’.

The team will share the printed publication at the next General Assembly, but for now, you can enjoy the online version!

The Irish Action Site team would like to take this opportunity to thank ACRES, the Irish National Parks and Wildlife Service, and the LIFE IP Wild Atlantic Nature team for their contributions during the design and production of this manual.
