On World Wetlands Day, the WaterLANDS Knowledge Site at Siikaneva in Finland hosted a snowy celebration to highlight the beauty of their peatlands.

For the occasion, they welcomed visitors to enjoy a winter’s day of outdoor activities at the Siikaneva bogs. Guests got to take part in snow sliding, snowshoeing, and skiing, followed by a cosy campfire where they enjoyed pancakes and sausages while engaging in lively conversations about Siikaneva and peatlands.

Siikaneva Fen and Bog is the largest continuous wetland area and the most significant wetlands conservation area in the Tampere region of Finland. It’s also part of the Integrated Carbon Observation System (ICOS), managed by the University of Eastern Finland.

The university’s research group, Peat&Tree, is both curious and solution driven in its approach to studying ecosystem adaptation to changing conditions, their feedback mechanisms and the relationship between humans and ecosystems. As part of their monitoring system, they operate live cameras streaming views of the Siikanevas peatlands, accessible to the public. You can explore them here and learn more about the WaterLANDS Knowledge Site here.
